Three groups of Cyclopes can be distinguished. In<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theogony\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Hesiod&#8217;s\u00a0Theogony<\/a>, they are the brothers Brontes, Steropes, and\u00a0Arges, who provided\u00a0Zeus\u00a0with his weapon the\u00a0thunderbolt. In\u00a0Homer&#8217;s\u00a0Odyssey, they are an uncivilized group of shepherds, the brethren of\u00a0Polyphemus\u00a0encountered by\u00a0Odysseus. Cyclopes were also famous as the builders of the\u00a0Cyclopean walls\u00a0of\u00a0Mycenae\u00a0and\u00a0Tiryns.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The fifth-century BC playwright\u00a0Euripides\u00a0wrote a\u00a0satyr play\u00a0entitled\u00a0Cyclops, about Odysseus&#8217; encounter with Polyphemus. Mentions of the Hesiodic and the wall-builder Cyclopes also figure in his plays. The third-century BC poet\u00a0Callimachus\u00a0makes the Hesiodic Cyclopes the assistants of smith-god\u00a0Hephaestus. So does\u00a0Virgil\u00a0in his Latin epic\u00a0Aeneid, where he seems to equate the Hesiodic and Homeric Cyclopes<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Hesiodic Cyclop<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Hesiod, in the\u00a0Theogony\u00a0(c. 700 BC), described three Cyclopes: Brontes, Steropes, and Arges, who were the sons of\u00a0Uranus\u00a0(Sky) and\u00a0Gaia\u00a0(Earth), and the brothers of the\u00a0Titans\u00a0and\u00a0Hundred-Handers, and who had a single eye set in the middle of their foreheads.They made for Zeus his all-powerful thunderbolt, and in so doing, the Cyclopes played a key role in the Greek succession myth, which told how the Titan Cronus overthrew his father Uranus, and how in turn Zeus overthrew Cronus and his fellow Titans, and how Zeus was eventually established as the final and permanent ruler of the cosmos.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The names that Hesiod gives them: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cyclopes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arges (Bright), Brontes (Thunder), and Steropes (Lightning)<\/a>, reflect their fundamental role as thunderbolt makers.
