Another name used by the Romans is\u00a0<b>Liber<\/b> meaning \u201cfree\u201d.\u00a0 Due to his association with wine and the Bacchanalia and other rites, and the freedom associated with it. His <i>thyrsus<\/i>, sometimes wound with ivy and dripping with honey, is both a beneficent wand and a weapon used to destroy those who oppose his cult and the freedoms he represents. As\u00a0<b>Eleutherios<\/b> (&#8220;the liberator&#8221;), his wine, music and ecstatic dance free his followers from self-conscious fear and care. Those who partake of his mysteries are believed to become possessed and empowered by the god himself.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In his religion, identical with or closely related to\u00a0Orphism, Dionysus was believed to have been born from the union of\u00a0<a title=\"Zeus\" href=\"https:\/\/greekart-souvenirs.gr\/en\/product\/clock-zeus10372\/\">Zeus<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Persephone, and to have himself represented a chthonic or underworld aspect of Zeus. Many believed that he had been born twice, having been killed and reborn as the son of Zeus and the mortal\u00a0Semele. In the\u00a0Eleusinian Mysteries\u00a0he was identified with\u00a0Iacchus, the son (or, alternately, husband) of\u00a0<a title=\"Demeter\" href=\"https:\/\/greekart-souvenirs.gr\/en\/product\/goddess-demetra\/\">Demeter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>ORIGINS AND CULT<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>His origins are uncertain, and his cults took many forms.\u00a0 Some are described by ancient sources as Thracian.\u00a0 Others as Greek.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> Though most accounts say he was born in Thrace, traveled abroad, and arrived in Greece as a foreigner.\u00a0 Evidence from the Mycenaean period of Greek history shows that he is one of Greece&#8217;s oldest attested gods. His attribute of &#8220;foreignness&#8221; as an arriving outsider-god may be inherent and essential to his cults, as he is a god of epiphany, sometimes called &#8220;the god that comes&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Wine played an important role in Greek culture, and the cult of Dionysus was the main religious focus surrounding its consumption.<sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> Wine, as well as the vines and grapes that produce it, were seen as not only a gift of the god.\u00a0 But also as\u00a0 a symbolic incarnation of him on earth. <sup id=\"cite_ref-julian_12-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0However, rather than being a god of drunkenness, as he was often stereotyped in the post-Classical era, the religion of Dionysus centered on the correct consumption of wine.\u00a0 Which could ease suffering and bring joy, as well as inspire divine madness distinct from drunkenness.<sup id=\"cite_ref-iconography_13-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> Performance art and drama were also central to his religion.\u00a0 And its festivals were the initial driving force behind the development of theatre.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Brockett_14-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The cult of Dionysus-Bacchus is also a &#8220;cult of the souls&#8221;; his maenads feed the dead through blood-offerings, and he acts as a divine communicant between the living and the dead.<sup id=\"cite_ref-15\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> He is sometimes categorised as a dying-and-rising god.\u00a0\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-corrente2012_16-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Dionysus is an\u00a0agriculture\u00a0and\u00a0vegetation deity. His connection to wine, grape-harvest, orchards,<sup id=\"cite_ref-17\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>and vegetation displays his role as a nature god. As the god of\u00a0viticulture\u00a0and\u00a0grapes, he is connected to the growth and harvest of the fruit.
