The period in which he led Athens, in fact, has been called the Age of Pericles due to his influence, not only on his\u00a0city&#8217;s fortunes, but on the whole of Greek history during the 5th century BCE and even after his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekart-souvenirs.gr\/en\/product\/charos-veronese-design\/\">death<\/a>. He was a fierce proponent of democracy. Even so, his reforms would lay the groundwork for the development of later democratic political systems.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Pericles&#8217; name means &#8220;surrounded by glory&#8221; .\u00a0 And he would live up to his name through his efforts to make Athens the greatest of the Greek city-states.\u00a0 His influence on Athenian society, politics, and culture was so great that Thucydides (l. 460\/455 &#8211; 399\/398 BCE), his contemporary, admirer, and historian, called him &#8220;the first citizen of Athens&#8221; (History, II.65). P<\/strong><\/em><em style=\"font-size: 14.4px;\"><strong>ericles promoted the arts,\u00a0literature, &amp;\u00a0philosophy\u00a0&amp; gave free reign to some of the most inspired writers, artists, &amp; thinkers of his time.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Pericles promoted the arts,\u00a0literature, and\u00a0philosophy\u00a0and gave free reign to some of the most inspired writers, artists, and thinkers of his time. He increased Athens&#8217; power through his use of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient.eu\/Delian_League\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Delian League<\/a>\u00a0to form the Athenian\u00a0empire\u00a0and led his city through the First\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient.eu\/Peloponnesian_War\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peloponnesian War<\/a>\u00a0(460-446 BCE) and the first two years of the Second Peloponnesian\u00a0War\u00a0(431-404 BCE). He was still actively engaged in political life when he died of the\u00a0plague\u00a0in 429 BCE.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>Cultural Achievements of Pericles<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em><strong>During the Age of Pericles, Athens blossomed as a center of education, art, culture, and democracy. Artists and sculptors, playwrights and poets, architects and philosophers all found Athens an exciting and enlivening atmosphere for their work.
