{"id":10300,"date":"2020-11-14T21:02:34","date_gmt":"2020-11-14T21:02:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greekart-souvenirs.gr\/product\/plato\/"},"modified":"2021-12-12T21:32:07","modified_gmt":"2021-12-12T19:32:07","slug":"plato","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/greekart-souvenirs.gr\/en\/product\/plato\/","title":{"rendered":"Plato"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 class=\"western\"><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">S<\/span><\/strong><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">tatue of Plato-Platon. <\/span><\/strong><strong>H<\/strong><strong>andmade of alabaster,and painted in museum patina.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>Plato\u00a0(l. 428\/427 &#8211; 348\/347 BCE) is considered the pre-eminent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient.eu\/greek\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greek<\/a>\u00a0philosopher, known for his\u00a0Dialogues\u00a0and for founding his Academy\u00a0north of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greekart-souvenirs.gr\/en\/product\/acropolis\/\">Athens<\/a>, traditionally considered the first university in the western world. Born Aristocles, son of Ariston of the deme Colytus, Plato had two older brothers (Adeimantus and Glaucon).\u00a0 Who both feature famously in Plato&#8217;s dialogue Republic, and a sister Potone.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>He is known by the nickname &#8216;Plato&#8217; which was given him by his wrestling coach.\u00a0 Because of his broad shoulders (in Greek &#8216;Platon&#8217; means broad). His family was aristocratic and well-connected politically and it seems Plato was expected to pursue a career in politics. His interests, however, tended more toward the arts and, in his youth, he wrote plays and, perhaps, poetry.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>Socrates and Plato<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em><strong>When he was in his late teens or early twenties, Plato heard Socrates teaching in the market.\u00a0 And abandoned his plans to pursue a literary career as a playwright.\u00a0 He burned his early work and devoted himself to philosophy.\u00a0 Socrates&#8217; execution had a great impact on the then 28 year old and he left Athens to travel, visiting Egypt\u00a0and\u00a0Italy\u00a0among other places, before returning to his homeland to write his dialogues and set up the Academy. His\u00a0Dialogues almost all feature Socrates as the main character.\u00a0 But whether this is an accurate portrayal of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient.eu\/socrates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Socrates&#8217;<\/a> actions and beliefs has long been contested.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>After abandoning his literary pursuits , Plato wrote the foundational philosophic works of the ancient world which would go on to influence world culture.
