The gold chest or “larnax” containing male bones from the main chamber of the royal tomb known as “Tomb II” in Vergina. The chest is decorated with the royal \u201cVergina Sun\u201d or \u201cStar\u201d symbol, which has been associated with the Argead dynasty.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

PHILLIP THE II-KING OF MACEDONIA<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

Although he is often only remembered for being the father of\u00a0Alexander the Great<\/a>,\u00a0Philip II of Macedon<\/a>\u00a0(reigned 359 BCE – 336 BCE) was an accomplished king and military commander in his own right, setting the stage for his son’s\u00a0victory over\u00a0Darius\u00a0III and the\u00a0conquest\u00a0of\u00a0Persia. Philip inherited a weak, backward country with an ineffective, undisciplined army and molded them into a formidable, efficient military force, eventually subduing the territories around Macedonia as well as subjugating most of\u00a0Greece<\/a>. He used bribery,\u00a0warfare<\/a>, and threats to secure his kingdom. However, without his insight and determination, history would never have heard of\u00a0Alexander.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Assassination<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

The\u00a0gilded\u00a0silver\u00a0diadem\u00a0of Philip II, found in his tomb at\u00a0Vergina. \u00a0 <\/a>Philip was murdered in October 336 BC, at\u00a0<\/span>Aegae<\/span>, the ancient capital of the kingdom of Macedon. The court had gathered there for the celebration of the marriage between\u00a0<\/span>Alexander I of Epirus<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Cleopatra of Macedon.\u00a0 W<\/span>ho was Philip’s daughter by his fourth wife\u00a0<\/span>Olympias<\/span>. While the king was entering unprotected into the town’s theatre (highlighting his approachability to the Greek diplomats present), he was killed by\u00a0<\/span>Pausanias of Orestis<\/span>, one of his seven bodyguards. The assassin immediately tried to escape and reach his associates who were waiting for him with horses at the entrance to Aegae. He was pursued by three of Philip’s bodyguards, tripped on a vine, and died by their hands.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
