She is described as &#8220;[the Lady] of good counsel,&#8221; and is the personification of divine order, fairness, law, natural law, and custom. Her symbols are the Scales of Justice, tools used to remain balanced and pragmatic. Her name means &#8220;divine law&#8221; rather than human ordinance, literally &#8220;that which is put in place&#8221;.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>To the ancient Greeks she was originally the organizer of the &#8220;communal affairs of humans.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h4><em><strong>DESCRIPTION OF THEMIS<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n<p><em><strong>The personification of abstract concepts is characteristic of the Greeks. The ability of the goddess is\u00a0 to foresee the future enabled her to become one of the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Oracle at Delphi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oracle_at_Delphi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oracles of Delphi<\/a>, which in turn led to her establishment as the goddess of divine justice.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Some classical representations of her showed her holding a sword, believed to represent her ability to cut fact from fiction; to her there was no middle ground<sup class=\"noprint Inline-Template Template-Fact\">[<\/sup>(depictions of Lady Justice wearing a blindfold are modern and not classical.) SHE built the Oracle at Delphi and was herself oracular. According to another legend, she received the Oracle at Delphi from <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Gaia (mythology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gaia_(mythology)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ga<\/a>i<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Gaia (mythology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gaia_(mythology)\">a<\/a>\u00a0and later gave it to\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Apollo (mythology)\" href=\"https:\/\/greekart-souvenirs.gr\/en\/product\/statue-of-apollo\/\">Apollo<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>When Themis is disregarded, Nemesis brings just and wrathful retribution; thus\u00a0 she shared the Nemesion\u00a0temple at\u00a0Rhamnous. Themis is not wrathful; she, &#8220;of the lovely cheeks,&#8221; was the first to offer\u00a0<a title=\"Hera\" href=\"https:\/\/greekart-souvenirs.gr\/en\/product\/statue-hera\/\">Hera<\/a>\u00a0a cup when she returned to Olympus distraught over threats from Zeus.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\">[5]<\/sup><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Themis presided over the proper relation between man and woman, the basis of the rightly ordered family (the family was seen as the pillar of the\u00a0deme.) Judges were often referred to as\u00a0&#8220;themistop\u00f3loi&#8221; (the servants of Themis.) Such was also the basis for order upon Olympus. Even Hera addressed her as &#8220;Lady Themis.&#8221;\u00a0 Her name\u00a0 might be substituted for Adrasteia in telling of the birth of Zeus on Crete.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Themis was present at\u00a0Delos\u00a0to witness the\u00a0birth of Apollo.
