The Winged Victory of Samothrace, also called the\u00a0Nike of Samothrace,<\/sup>\u00a0is a marble\u00a0Hellenistic sculpture\u00a0of\u00a0Nike<\/a>\u00a0(the\u00a0Greek goddess<\/a> of victory).\u00a0 That was created in about the 2nd century BC. Since 1884, it has been prominently displayed at the Louvre\u00a0and is one of the most celebrated sculptures in the world.\u00a0 \u00a0H.\u00a0W. Janson\u00a0described it as “the greatest masterpiece of Hellenistic sculpture”.<\/sup><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The sculpture is one of a small number of major Hellenistic statues surviving in the original, rather than Roman copies. Only\u00a0Winged Victory‘s<\/span>\u00a0right wing is not original, and was added by mirroring the left wing.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Description of Victory<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

The statue is 244 centimetres (8.01\u00a0ft) high. It was created not only to honour the goddess<\/a>, Nike, but probably also to commemorate a naval action. It conveys a sense of action and triumph as well as portraying artful flowing drapery. As though the goddess were descending to alight upon the prow of a ship.. Rendered in grey and white\u00a0Thasian\u00a0and\u00a0Parian marble, the figure originally formed part of the\u00a0Samothrace temple complex<\/a>\u00a0dedicated to the Great gods,\u00a0Megaloi Theoi. It stood on a rostral pedestal of gray marble from\u00a0Lartos\u00a0representing the\u00a0prow\u00a0of a ship (most likely a\u00a0trihemiolia<\/a>), and represents the goddess as she descends from the skies to the triumphant fleet.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Assessment, reception and influence<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

Despite its significant damage and incompleteness, the <\/span>Victory is held to be one of the great surviving masterpieces of sculpture from the Hellenistic Period, and from the entire Greco-Roman era. The statue shows a mastery of form and movement which has impressed critics and artists since its discovery. It is considered one of the Louvre’s greatest treasures. And since the late 19th century it has been displayed in the most dramatic fashion, at the head of the sweeping Daru staircase.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
