Tyche\u00a0(\u00a0\u03a4\u03cd\u03c7\u03b7-<\/span>ancient greek\/roman-Fortuna) was the presiding\u00a0tutelary deity<\/a>\u00a0who governed the fortune and prosperity of a city, its\u00a0destiny. In Classical\u00a0Greek mythology<\/a>, she is the daughter of\u00a0Aphrodite<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Zeus<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0Hermes<\/a>. The Greek historian Polybius believed that when no cause can be discovered to events.\u00a0 Such as floods, droughts, frosts, or even in politics, then the cause of these events may be fairly attributed to Tyche.\u00a0 <\/sup><\/strong><\/em>Increasingly during the\u00a0Hellenistic period, cities venerated their own\u00a0Tychai, specific iconic versions of the original Tyche. This practice was continued in the\u00a0iconography\u00a0of\u00a0Roman art.\u00a0 \u00a0Even into the Christian period, often as sets of the greatest cities of the empire.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Tyche appears on many coins of the Hellenistic period in the three centuries before the Christian era, especially from cities in the Aegean. Unpredictable turns of fortune drive the complicated plotlines of Hellenistic romances, such as,\u00a0<\/span>Leucippe and Clitophon\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>Daphnis and Chloe. She experienced a resurgence in another era of uneasy change, the final days of publicly sanctioned\u00a0Paganism.\u00a0 Between the late-fourth-century emperors Julian\u00a0and\u00a0Theodosius I, who definitively closed the temples. The effectiveness of her capricious power even achieved respectability in philosophical circles during that generation.\u00a0 Although among poets it was a commonplace to revile her for a fickle harlot.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
