Goddess of Justice- Themis (Ancient Greek<\/a>: \u0398\u03ad\u03bc\u03b9\u03c2).\u00a0 She is an ancient Greek Titaness<\/a>. She is described as “[the Lady] of good counsel,” and is the\u00a0personification\u00a0of divine order, fairness, law,\u00a0natural law, and custom. Her symbols are the\u00a0Scales of Justice<\/a>, tools used to remain balanced and pragmatic. Themis means “divine law” rather than human ordinance, literally “that which is put in place”.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>To the ancient Greeks she was originally the organizer of the “communal affairs of humans.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

DESCRIPTION OF THEMIS<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

The personification\u00a0of abstract concepts is characteristic of the\u00a0Greeks. The ability of the goddess Themis to foresee the future enabled her to become one of the\u00a0Oracles of Delphi, which in turn led to her establishment as the goddess of divine justice.<\/strong><\/em>Some classical representations of Themis showed her holding a sword, believed to represent her ability to cut fact from fiction; to her there was no middle ground[<\/sup>(depictions of\u00a0Lady Justice\u00a0wearing a blindfold are modern and not classical.) Themis built the\u00a0Oracle at Delphi<\/a>\u00a0and was herself oracular. According to another legend, Themis received the\u00a0Oracle at Delphi\u00a0from\u00a0Gaia<\/a>\u00a0and later gave it to\u00a0Apollo<\/a>.<\/sup><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

When Themis is disregarded,\u00a0Nemesis\u00a0brings just and wrathful retribution; thus Themis shared the\u00a0Nemesion\u00a0temple at\u00a0Rhamnous. Themis is not wrathful; she, “of the lovely cheeks,” was the first to offer\u00a0Hera<\/a> a cup when she returned to Olympus distraught over threats from Zeus.\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong><\/em>Themis presided over the proper relation between man and woman, the basis of the rightly ordered family (the family was seen as the pillar of the\u00a0deme.) Judges were often referred to as\u00a0“themistop\u00f3loi”\u00a0(the servants of Themis.) Such was also the basis for order upon Olympus. Even\u00a0Hera\u00a0addressed her as “Lady Themis.” The name of Themis might be substituted for\u00a0Adrasteia\u00a0in telling of the birth of Zeus on Crete.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Themis was present at\u00a0Delos\u00a0to witness the\u00a0birth of Apollo. According to\u00a0Ovid, it was Themis rather than\u00a0Zeus<\/a>\u00a0who told\u00a0Deucalion\u00a0to throw the bones of “his Mother” over his shoulder to create a new race of humankind after the deluge.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
