God Apollo\u00a0was a major\u00a0Greek<\/a>\u00a0god who was associated with the bow,\u00a0music, and divination. The epitome of youth and beauty, source of life and healing, patron of the civilized arts.\u00a0 And as bright and powerful as the sun itself, Apollo was, arguably, the most loved of all the Greek gods. He was particularly worshipped at Delphi<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Delos<\/a>, amongst the most famous of all religious sanctuaries in the Greek world.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Birth & Family OF GOD APOLLO<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

Son of\u00a0Zeus<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Leto, and the twin brother of\u00a0Artemis<\/a>, Apollo was born on the island of Delos (in\u00a0Hesiod’s\u00a0Theogony\u00a0he is clutching a golden sword). His mother, fearful of revenge from Zeus’ wife\u00a0Hera, had chosen barren Delos as the safest retreat she could find. At his first taste of ambrosia, he was said to have immediately transformed from babe to man. Apollo was then given his bow, made by the master craftsman of Mount Olympus,\u00a0Hephaestus<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

As with the other major divinities, Apollo had many children; perhaps the most famous are\u00a0Orpheus\u00a0(who inherited his father’s musical skills and became a virtuoso with the\u00a0lyre\u00a0or\u00a0kithara),\u00a0Asclepius<\/a>\u00a0(to whom he gave his knowledge of healing and\u00a0medicine) and, according to the 5th-century BCE tragedian\u00a0Euripides, the hero Ion.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

GOD APOLLO In Mytho<\/a>logy<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

Apollo is a significant protagonist in\u00a0Homer’s account of the\u00a0Trojan War\u00a0in the\u00a0Iliad. On the side of the Trojans, he gives particular assistance to the Trojan heroes Hector, Aeneas, and Glaukos. HE is saving their lives on more than one occasion with his divine intervention. He brought plague\u00a0to the Achaeans, led the entire Trojan army (holding Zeus’ fearsome aegis) in an attack which destroyed the Achaean defensive walls, and was also responsible for guiding\u00a0<\/span>Paris<\/a>‘ arrow to the heel of\u00a0<\/span>Achilles<\/a>, killing the seemingly invincible Greek hero. He is most frequently described by Homer and Hesiod as the ‘far-shooter’, the ‘far-worker’, the ‘rouser of armies’, and ‘Phoebus Apollo’.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
