Shield of Achilles<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

An\u00a0aspis\u00a0(Ancient Greek:\u00a0\u1f00\u03c3\u03c0\u03af\u03c2<\/span>, plural\u00a0aspides,\u00a0\u1f00\u03c3\u03c0\u03af\u03b4\u03b5\u03c2<\/span>), sometimes also referred to as an\u00a0hoplon\u00a0(Greek:\u00a0\u1f45\u03c0\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd<\/span>), was the heavy wooden\u00a0shield<\/a>\u00a0used by the infantry in various periods of\u00a0ancient Greece.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Construction<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n

An aspis was deeply dished and made primarily of wood. Some had a thin sheet of\u00a0bronze\u00a0on the outer face, often just around the rim. In some periods, the convention was to decorate the shield; in others, it was usually left plain. Probably the most famous aspis decoration is that of\u00a0Sparta\u00a0(Lacedaemon): a capital\u00a0lambda<\/a>\u00a0(\u039b<\/span>), for\u00a0Lacedaemon\u00a0its alternative name (\u039b\u03b1\u03ba\u03b5\u03b4\u03b1\u03af\u03bc\u03c9\u03bd<\/a><\/span>). From the late 5th century BC,\u00a0Athenian\u00a0hoplites\u00a0commonly used the\u00a0little owl, while the shields of\u00a0Theban\u00a0hoplites were sometimes decorated with a\u00a0sphinx, or the club of\u00a0Heracles<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

THE MEASUREMENT of shield of Achilles<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

The aspis measured at least 0.9 metres (2 ft 11 in) in diameter and weighed about 7.3 kilograms (16 lb).\u00a0 And it was about 25\u201338 millimetres (0.98\u20131.50 in) thick.[1]<\/sup>\u00a0This large shield was made possible partly by its shape, which allowed it to be supported comfortably on the shoulder. The revolutionary part of the shield was, in fact, the grip. Known as an\u00a0Argive\u00a0grip, it placed the handle at the edge of the shield and was supported by a leather fastening for the forearm at the center.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

This allowed hoplites more mobility with the shield. As well as the ability to capitalize on their offensive capabilities and better support the phalanx. The shield rested on a man’s shoulders, stretching down to the knees. They were designed for a mass of hoplites to push forward into the opposing army.\u00a0 A move called othismos, and it was their most essential equipment.[2]<\/sup>\u00a0That the shield was convex[3]<\/sup>\u00a0made it possible for warriors to use it as a\u00a0flotation device for crossing rivers, and its large round shape allowed it to be used for hauling the bodies of the dead from the battlefield.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
